Javeenbah Theatre premieres in their 2023 season

Javeenbah Theatre Company has proved that COVID is no match for this volunteer-based community theatre group.

After two tumultuous years of postponements and cancellations due to the pandemic, Nerang’s Javeenbah Theatre is excited to announce its season full of six new productions.

Opening their 2023 Season will be ‘The Brothers Grimm Spectacularthon’. Directed by Taylor Holmes, who returns to the theatre group after recently working as Music Director on ‘Next To Normal’, ‘The Brothers Grimm Spectacularthon’ sees fairytales turned on their heads in a fast-paced, rollicking ride. Two narrators and a troupe of actors attempt to combine all 209 stories, which range from the classics like Snow White, Cinderella, and Hansel & Gretel to more bizarre and obscure stories like The Devil’s Grandmother and The Girl Without Hands. This production is a wild, free-form comedy with lots of audience input and madcap fun.

Next up is the third-time lucky production of ‘Cinderella!’, which had seen its fair share of postponements. Directed by Javeenbah Theatre’s Life Member Jocelyn Moore-Carter, this version of Cinderella isn’t about princes and princesses. It’s about a single woman in her early 40s trying to go on a date and a single guy who has an unreasonable fear of not being heard over loud music in bars. There may not be any ugly sisters, but there’s the occasional mysterious animal, dancing and midnight. Oh, and there’s one beautiful transformation that needs to be seen.

As the third production of the year, ‘Apologia’, which is directed by Steven Days, tells the story of Kristin Miller,  an eminent and successful art historian. As a young mother, she followed her politics and vocation – storming Parisian barricades and moving to Florence. Her birthday should be a time for celebration but when her two sons deliver their versions of the past, everyone must confront the cost of Kristin’s commitment to her passions. The choices and priorities of one woman in particular, as well as those of women in general, are the subject of this play by Alexi Kaye Campbell.

Javeenbah Theatre will also welcome back their ‘One Act Wonders’, which features a prime collection of one-act plays from local writers and directors. This exciting opportunity once again stages new, local work in their world premieres.

Diving into the adventures of Robin Hoods, next up is ‘Sherwood! The Adventures of Robin Hood’, directed by Nathan French. In this comedy, Robin is the life of the party. But an encounter with inhumane greed keeps him up at night, and not in the good time way he’s used to. This classic tale of courage takes a lighthearted romp as the company crusades their way through Sherwood Forest.

Rounding out Javeenbah Theatre’s 2023 Season is the musical ‘Falsettos’, brought to you by director Jake Goodall and the directorial team behind 2022’s ‘Boys in the Band.’ ‘Falsettos’ is a story of a large, eccentric, and dysfunctional, but loving, Jewish family in New York at the end of the 1970s. Initially, Marvin seems blessed with the perfect family. He has a caring wife, Trina and a young son, Jason. Nevertheless, the family is soon torn apart when Marvin leaves Trina for a man called Whizzer. With Musical Direction by Rachel Love and Choreography by Charlotte Schmidt, this is a show not to miss!
