For criminal lawyer Tessa, the law is a thrilling game that she loves to win, taking no prisoners. She has fought every step of the way for her position, and she’s the best there is. Her feelings have no place in her work – just the rules. That’s why, even when she’s called upon to defend men accused of sexually assaulting women, she detaches her feminism and her compassion in the cut and thrust of the courtroom.

But when Tessa finds herself on the other side of the bar – as a victim – the system she thought she had mastered starts working against her.

Suzie Miller’s urgent, gripping one-woman show combines wry humour, raw emotion and an unforgettable character. In a post-#MeToo world, it’s a stinging rebuke to a flawed legal system, and a clarion call to change the rules.

Intriguing, diverse and beautiful, ‘Echo’ is a compelling and dynamic double bill presented by ADC’s talented Youth Ensemble.

Featuring two new creations by emerging makers, Katina Olsen and Lauren Graham, ‘Echo’ features the 27 talented dancers of the Australasian Dance Collective’s Youth Ensemble.

The live dance performances sit side by side with powerful and extraordinary film works created by the youth ensemble members.

A proud Wakka Wakka Kombumerri woman, Olsen’s choreographic highlights include ‘Mother’s Cry’ for Sydney Dance Company’s New Breed 2018, movement direction for the play ‘Sunshine Super Girl’ (Sydney Festival 2021), the ABC series ‘Cleverman 2’ and the Malthouse production ‘Walking into the Bigness’.

With a sombre layer of honesty and simplistic beauty, her creation for ‘Echo‘ is drenched in subtle gestures of communication and connections that draw us to our land and humanity.

Graham is a QUT Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship recipient, and has worked with many artists including Natalie Weir, Daniel Riley and Craig Barry and appeared in Nerida Matthaei’s regional tour of ‘Angel-Monster’, collaborating in developments of Liesel Zink’s ‘The Stance’ and ‘Circa’s Leviathan’.

With an undercurrent of hypnotic drive, her ‘Echo’ piece pulses to intrude on its own intricate hum. ‘Echo’ is a key platform in ADC’s commitment to actively developing and inspiring the next generation of dancers and dance makers. It is a chance to see the art of the future, right now as the creative leaders of tomorrow showcase what an exciting and vibrant future awaits.

A dead earth.
A climate refugee.
A voyage to the outer solar system.

On the resource-depleted earth of a not so distant future, a young climate refugee named Ishmael is given the chance to build a new life, provided she can survive a voyage to the outer solar system aboard the MV Pequod under the command of the obsessive Captain Ahab.

‘Moby Dick’ reimagined as a contemporary space saga, ‘Ishmael’ recasts earth’s no-longer-vast oceans with the immensity of the universe, and the endless possibilities and terrors it holds. In weaving the story to life, this boundary-pushing production melds live filmmaking with live-action, miniature sets, puppetry and an original score by indie-pop musician Bec Sandridge to tell a captivating story about individual hope and collective redemption.

Don’t miss the world premiere season of ‘Ishmael’ as part of Brisbane Festival.

The blockbuster Australian novel, ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ bursts onto the Brisbane stage!

Eli Bell’s childhood in the outer Brisbane suburbs is far from the idyllic 1980s haze some kids would remember. His alcoholic dad has shot through, his ex-druggie mum is in jail, his stepfather’s dealing heroin, his brother Gus is a mute who swirls cryptic messages in the air with his finger, and his babysitter Slim is a convicted killer and infamous escapee from Boggo Road Gaol.

Beset by chaos on all sides, a run-in with the local crime king and his henchman sets the 13-year-old with the old soul on a journey to find out what kind of a man he is going to be.

‘Boy Swallows Universe’ is adapted from the smash-hit novel loosely based on Brisbane author Trent Dalton’s own childhood. It’s an exhilarating story of magic and madness, of beauty and brutality, of joy and heartbreak, and of the power of love to triumph over the darkest of circumstances.
