‘Hamilton’ set to satisfy in Sydney

Australia’s capital city, Sydney, has slayed a fiercely fought battle to secure the premiere rights of the award-winning musical, ‘Hamilton’.

Written by composer, lyricist and actor, Lin-Manual Miranda, the show will premiere at the Lyric Theatre in Pyrmont, in March 2021.

Miranda, whose credits also include the Disney soundtrack of ‘Moana’, a role in the Mary Poppins sequel ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ and the Broadway musical ‘In the Heights’, said himself in a statement, “Thank you to everyone in Australia who’s been asking for Hamilton. It’s on its way and we can’t wait.”

Telling the story of forgotten American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, the musical captures his ascent from poverty and rise to power, during the American War of Independence.

‘Hamilton’ has received rave reviews since its time on Broadway and has quickly become a hit with musical theatre fans. Its achievements are aplenty, having been awarded 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre album.

An intense battle ensued between Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne to secure the very successful production in Australia, with Sydney coming out as champion in the bidding war. Set to be produced by Michael Cassel, a casting call is expected to take place later this year.

The musical is a blend of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap and RnB. It’s often described as the story of America then told by America now, due to its historical setting and contemporary context. It also has received favourable recognition for its casting of actors for a diverse range of racial backgrounds.

One thing is for certain, you don’t have to wait for it much longer, nor worry about buying that plane ticket to New York or London.
