Queensland Theatre update their uncertain 2020 season

In extraordinary times, Queensland Theatre have provided an update on their 2020 season.

Sharing their disappointment as they face hard decisions in light of COVID-19, the company has unfortunately cancelled their 2020 productions of ‘Othello’, ‘The Children’, ‘Phaedra’ and ‘FIFTY!’.

In a statement issued on their website and via email, the company spoke of the many challenges they’ve navigated while adhering to the developments of coronavirus.

“At Queensland Theatre we have shared your disappointment to see theatres closed and our artists cut off from our audiences, and we thank you for your patience as we have re-imagined our offerings for 2020…,” the statement read.

“It has taken us a little longer than we’d hoped to update you on Season 2020. We had a full year of productions set out, stretching from February to December which we’ve had to dismantle.”

While the restrictions regarding the pandemic continue to change, the company has hoped to deliver a ‘mini-season’ from October 2020, to see out an unforgettable year. This programme will likely include ‘Triple X’, ‘Prima Facie’ and the Queensland Premier’s Drama-Award winner, ‘The Holidays’.

If social distancing rules are relaxed to the point where the company can re-open its Bille Brown Theatre, they will immediately commence ticketing transfers and new bookings.

Queensland Theatre is also working with Brisbane Festival on Tim McGarry’s hotly-anticipated stage adaptation of the acclaimed novel, ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ by Queensland author, Trent Dalton.

In the meantime, the company has launched their digital ‘Quality Time with QT’ program, which involves play readings with actors, conversations with creatives, practical production tutorials and a celebration of 50 seasons of stories.

They also have commenced ‘The Scene Project’, which is a participatory program that involves Brisbane and regional schools in the creative process of performance, from rehearsal to production.

The company has continued to develop new ticketing solutions and are investigating the best possible outcomes to keep the arts alive for artists and audiences alike.
