Bring on ‘Bring It On’

It’s time to bust out your pom-poms because ‘Bring It On: The Musical’ is returning to Australia.

Touching down in Melbourne in July and premiering in Sydney in August this year, the colourful and nostalgic musical is set to bring a whole lot of cheer to fans.

Inspired by the classic hit-flick released in 2000 of the same name and starring acting phenomenon Kirsten Dunst, ‘Bring It On’ in movie form follows a high school cheerleading squad and their battle to win championships, after their cheer-captain stole all their routines.

The musical is very loosely based on the original story – with new characters and a new story. In fact, the plot is so fresh, it has more similarities to the franchise’s sequel, ‘Bring It On: All Or Nothing’, which was released in 2006, starring Hayden Panettiere.

‘Bring It On: The Musical’ follows main character Campbell, who is ‘cheer-royalty’ and captain of her team at Truman High School. Unexpected circumstances force her to spend her final year of school at the neighbouring Jackson High School, where she befriends the dance crew girls and their headstrong cheer captain, Danielle. Campell must work together with the new squad to win the ultimate competition – even if that means going up against her old squad at National Championships.

Regardless of the new plot, the musical has proved it can still generate the same hype, with live action cheerleading stunts, bright costumes, and super fun cheer routines that will make you want to work on your flexibility once more. Not to mention, ‘Bring It On: The Musical’ features original music and lyrics from ‘Hamilton’s’ own Lin-Manual Miranda, an original story by ‘Avenue Q’s’ Jeff Whitty, music by ‘Next to Normal’ composer, Tom Kitt, and lyrics by ‘High Fidelity’s’, Amanda Green.

The musical has received much critical acclaim, including nominations for both a Tony Award and a Green Room Award. After the productions professional Australian premiere in 2018, the show will return to our shores with some original cast members and some new faces.

‘Bring It On: The Musical’ performs at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre from 11-28 July 2019 and Sydney’s State Theatre from 27 August – 8 September 2019.
