Javeenbah Theatre Ignites Creative Spark with Local Talent

Javeenbah Theatre Company has once again opened its doors to local playwrights and directors in its fourth annual “One Act Wonders” festival. This renowned community theatre is celebrating Gold Coast’s local creative talents by producing brand new, world premiere works. The festival, which begins on Friday, July 21st and runs through to Saturday, August 5th, 2023, features a plethora of one-act plays ranging from intense dramas to side-splitting comedies.

Jake Goodall, the festival’s producer and a former actor in the initial run, enthusiastically shared his experience of returning as this year’s Producer/Convenor. “I was involved in the first trial of this production originally named ‘Platform Festival’ as an actor, and am thrilled to return. We have five pieces of work involving seven local directors and writers. Managing group rehearsals and witnessing the plays come alive has been something truly special,” remarked Goodall.

The festival showcases an impressive lineup:

  1. Mothers’ Group – Directed by Kaela Gray and penned by Monique Dumaine, this play offers a humorous and poignant glimpse into the lives of new mothers. The story is centered around a group of women who, despite their differences, are united by the common bond of motherhood.
  2. Hell – Both written and directed by Mikayla Maree Melo, Hell takes audiences on a hilarious journey with Louise, who finds herself entangled in the bureaucracy of the afterlife due to an unexpected mix-up.
  3. Couch Surfing – With direction by Vicki Lawrence and script by Gilliam Crow, Couch Surfing explores the dynamics of co-living and the secrets that can unravel when living on a shared couch.
  4. The Fountain of Destiny – A captivating adventure written and directed by Jack Lovett, this play follows John and Jen in their epic quest to find the mythical Fountain of Destiny.
  5. Who’s on First? – A rib-tickling adaptation directed by Laura Starre, this play will have the audience in stitches with its comedic misunderstandings and wordplay.

One Act Wonders is an essential platform for aspiring and established playwrights and directors to showcase their creativity and bring their visions to life. The festival is an exquisite blend of storytelling, art, and community spirit.
