Thriller ‘The Royal Hotel’ Set for Aussie Cinema Release on November 23

The much-awaited thriller, ‘The Royal Hotel,’ is set to hit Australian cinemas on November 23. Directed by the acclaimed Kitty Green, known for ‘The Assistant’ and ‘Casting JonBenet,’ and co-written with Oscar Redding of ‘Van Diemen’s Land’ fame, the film boasts a stellar cast including Julia Garner, Jessica Henwick, Hugo Weaving, and Toby Wallace. The film is a Transmission Films release.

‘The Royal Hotel’ has already garnered attention and praise at prominent international film festivals. It made its mark at Telluride, Toronto, and the London Film Festival, where it received glowing early reviews. The thriller is also set to be the Opening Night film for two Australian film festivals – the inaugural SXSW Sydney on October 15 and the Adelaide Film Festival on October 18. Brisbane International Film Festival will also showcase the movie on November 3.

The film’s synopsis offers a tantalizing peek into its plot: Americans Hanna (portrayed by Garner) and Liv (played by Henwick) are best friends on a backpacking adventure in Australia. Financial constraints lead them to a temporary job at a pub in a distant Outback mining town called ‘The Royal Hotel.’ While the pub’s owner, Billy (Hugo Weaving), and the local patrons introduce the duo to the unique Australian drinking culture, the fun soon takes a dark turn. The friends find themselves in a disturbing situation that spirals quickly beyond their grasp.

Behind the scenes, the film has a powerhouse production team. Emile Sherman and Iain Canning of See-Saw Films, celebrated for their work on ‘The Power of the Dog,’ ‘Lion,’ and ‘The King’s Speech,’ have produced ‘The Royal Hotel.’ They’re joined by Liz Watts, Head of Film and Television (Aus) for See-Saw Films and known for ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘The King,’ and Kath Shelper of Scarlett Pictures.

Director Kitty Green, based in New York, will be in Australia for the festival screenings and is open to interviews.

With its intriguing plot, notable cast, and accomplished production team, ‘The Royal Hotel’ promises to be a cinematic experience worth the anticipation. The film opens in Australian cinemas from November 23rd.
