‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ Set for Historic Run at Comedy Theatre

The renowned production of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ featuring Kat Stewart is set to make a historic return at the Comedy Theatre in June 2024, for a strictly limited three-week run.

This announcement was made today by GWB Entertainment, Andrew Henry Presents, and Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre, marking a significant moment for Melbourne’s theatre scene.

Directed by Sarah Goodes, this acclaimed version of Edward Albee’s profound drama achieved immense success during its original run at Red Stitch’s intimate venue in St Kilda. The production, celebrated for its raw energy and stellar performances, particularly by Stewart, will now reach a broader audience at a major commercial venue.

‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ is recognised as one of the sharpest and most engaging plays in English literature. It explores the complexities of marriage and personal disillusionment through the tumultuous relationship of Martha and George, portrayed in this production by real-life couple Kat Stewart and David Whiteley.

The play’s move to the Comedy Theatre is part of a unique partnership, the first of its kind in Red Stitch’s 23-year history, which aims to bridge the gap between Melbourne’s vibrant independent theatre sector and larger commercial stages. The producers, GWB Entertainment and Andrew Henry Presents expressed their enthusiasm for introducing the play’s “unyielding ferocity” to a wider audience.

This run follows the production’s previous sold-out five-week season and comes amidst a longstanding tradition of prestigious performances of the play, which has attracted top talent over the decades and was famously adapted into an award-winning film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ stars Kat Stewart, David Whiteley, Emily Goddard and Harvey Zielinski, with Set and Costume Design by Harriet Oxley.

The show performs from 29 June to 14 July 2024. Tickets start at $79.00 and are on sale now.
