Acclaimed Director Bruce Beresford to Helm The Place I Belong: The Moe Norman Story

David Carver Films has secured the talents of Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated director Bruce Beresford to helm the highly anticipated feature film, The Place I Belong: The Moe Norman Story. This inspiring biopic follows the journey of Moe Norman, a social misfit savant and self-taught amateur golfer, whose rise from caddie and bowling alley pinsetter to professional golf tour player captured the hearts of many.

The film’s narrative delves into Norman’s incredible yet heartbreaking life, exploring the triumphs and challenges he faced. Despite being bullied out of the sport he loved due to his eccentric behaviour, Norman remained an unknown legend, winning smaller tournaments and setting course records. His passion for golf never waned, even as he struggled to make ends meet, at times sleeping in his car or sand traps at the courses he played.

Bruce Beresford, renowned for his remarkable directorial achievements, including Driving Miss Daisy, Tender Mercies, and Breaker Morant, expressed his enthusiasm for taking on this unique project. While initially sceptical as a non-golfer, Beresford was captivated by the script and the fascinating characters it portrays.

“As a non-golfer, when I received the script, I thought I would read a few pages then politely pass. My prejudice disintegrated a few pages in. The central character is delightfully eccentric. The story of Moe’s amazing life and career and of those around him is told with humour, compassion, sophistication, and depth. I enthusiastically accepted the offer to direct such a fascinating group of characters and unusual story,” Beresford stated.

The screenplay, skillfully crafted by David Carver, Mark Bergen, Josh Schorr, and Todd Korgan, draws from previous versions by Joshua Michael Stern, David Lee Miller, and Eric Adams. The film promises to be a period piece, with Beresford’s expertise in transformational roles adding depth and authenticity to Moe Norman’s story.

The Place I Belong: The Moe Norman Story has been a passion project for the executive producers, David Steinberg and Robyn Todd, as well as the co-producers, Wayne and Janet Gretzky, for over 25 years. The film’s production is set to begin in the spring of 2024, and audiences can look forward to an engaging and moving portrayal of Moe Norman’s remarkable life.
