Disney’s new ‘Aladdin’ trailer reveals Will Smith’s blue Genie

Disney have dropped their latest trailer for ‘Aladdin’ and the world received their first look at a very blue Will Smith.

Debuting during the 2019 Grammy’s, this live-action trailer gave us some great glimpses of notable characters Jafar (Marwan Kenzari), Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and of course Aladdin himself (played by Mena Massoud).

But it’s Will Smith’s bulked up blue form that’s got us talking.

Proving we’ve got a friend in him, he appears at the end of the minute-long trailer donning Genie’s infamous style. With his natural swagger intact, he quizzes Aladdin about who he is.

It’s a surprising reveal well worth the anticipation.

In December last year, Smith received backlash from fans when pictures of the cast were posted on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.  Fans were quick to comment on Smith’s lack of blue skin and character’s chosen hair piece. Curbing worries, Smith was quick to confirm his character would indeed be blue.

Shortly after the new trailer aired, Smith posted on Instagram, “I told y’all I was gon’ be Blue!! Y’all need to trust me more often!”.

It’s been twenty-seven years since the animated classic became a Disney sensation. Smith will take on the Genie, originally made famous by Robin Williams.  Adding his own take on it, he promises to bring a hip-hop flavour.

‘Aladdin’ tells the story of a ‘street rat’ who finds a magical lamp and has his wishes granted.  He disguises himself as a Sultan to win the love of Princess Jasmine. However, all is not as it seems, and evil has plans to ruin everyone’s chance of happiness.

Many cast members have already confirmed their involvement, including Navid Negahban as the Sultan and Billy Magnussen as new character, Prince Anders. The voice of Iago (Jafar’s parrot) is yet to be announced.

The live-action remake will fly into cinemas May 2019.
