Holiday Adventure inspires new children’s gallery at HOTA

From Saturday 11 June, HOTA Children’s Gallery presents a delightful, immersive and interactive exhibition – ‘Postcards from the Edge’.

The exhibition shares Brisbane-based artist Martin Edge’s joyful view of the world – in particular, his travel adventures documented in his colourful paintings.

“I love to travel, and I think of every day as a new adventure,” said Edge.

“I make paintings about the places I have visited. Or the places I dream about visiting.”

‘Postcards from the Edge’ welcomes families to make their own memories during their visit and reflect on travel and holiday experiences they’ve had (or dream of having), evoking memories and inspiring creative play.  HOTA CEO, Criena Gehrke spoke about the imagination behind the gallery.

“Martin’s zest for life is reimagined in this exhibition,” said Gehrke.

“The exhibition is underpinned by Martin’s philosophy that you can create holiday memories anywhere. You don’t have to leave home to travel; simply use your imagination.”

Martin began painting in 2007 and describes himself as a naïve artist who depicts the world according to his everyday life, including adventures that he has been on or aspires to undertake.

Holiday vibes abound in Martin’s beach scenes, where you can climb a giant sandcastle, visit his souvenir shop and create your own holiday mementos to take home.

“The Gallery team has loved working with Martin. His colourful palette conveys his sense of joy and optimism and we invite you to see the world through his eyes as an artist with autism,” said Gehrke.

“This exhibition, with support from our major partner Robina Town Centre, features new artworks by Martin showcasing the Gold Coast, as well as fun interactive experiences that families have come to know and love at HOTA’s Children’s Gallery.”

Following its first two successful exhibitions for families – ‘World Upside Down’ and ‘Dumpling Dreams’ – HOTA’s dedicated Children’s Gallery has contributed to the 180,000 visitors the Gallery welcomed in its first twelve months of opening.

‘Postcards from the Edge’ opens at HOTA, Home of the Arts from Saturday, 11 June 2022, and will be open 7 days a week. Entry to the exhibition is FREE.
