Broadway Hit ‘Hadestown’ rises in Melbourne in 2025
Melbourne audiences are set to be enchanted by the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown when it arrives at Her Majesty’s Theatre in May 2025.
Following a record-breaking run in Sydney, the celebrated show will continue its Australian tour, offering Melburnians a chance to experience the critically acclaimed production.
Hadestown is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, with music, lyrics, and book by Mitchell, developed in collaboration with director Rachel Chavkin. Originating as an indie theatre project, the production has evolved into a genre-defying sensation, blending modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine the ancient tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.
The musical, which first premiered on Broadway in 2019, has captured hearts and imaginations worldwide, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Director. The show’s success continued with a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album and a nomination for the London Evening Standard Award.
Presented by Opera Australia and JONES Theatrical Group, Hadestown explores two intertwining love stories—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and the turbulent relationship between King Hades and his wife Persephone. The musical takes audiences on a journey to the underworld and back, tackling themes of love, hope, and perseverance against a backdrop of industry versus nature.
The production’s creative team includes some of the most distinguished names in theatre, such as Tony Award winner Rachel Hauck (set design), four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Krass (costume design), and Obie Award winner David Neumann (choreography). The ensemble cast and additional crew members will be announced in the coming months.
Tickets for the Melbourne season are now on sale, with performances expected to sell out quickly.
