A Practical Theatre Christmas Gift List

In what is quickly becoming a Christmas tradition for Theatre Haus, we are excited to share a third Theatre Christmas Gift List, compiled by a theatre lover for theatre lovers. “But it’s only November!” You scream? Well, we need to give you time to subtly post it on your socials and send it to your family/friends. Christmas shopping doesn’t happen overnight, not now the whole world has gone Amazon crazy.

Here are our top picks for this year – with a focus on the practical as well as the “just for fun”. If these don’t fit your gift recipient, check out the previous years’ lists linked at the bottom of the article!

Encore – Game ($)

You can never have enough theatre-related games for those post-show parties and late night cast hangouts. Encore will have you singing up a storm and challenging you to remember your lyrics.

Visit the FishPond website to grab yours.

Finding Me by Viola Davis ($)

A legend of the stage and screen, Viola Davis released her autobiography this year and it is a must for any theatre lovers. While the content may not be appropriate for all ages, her success in the face of injustice is nothing short of remarkable.

Playbill Binder ($$)

We’ve thrown around the idea of using magazine holders in the past, but how iconic is Playbill! They now offer beautiful leather binders to store all your programmes. They may be a little more to ship to Australia, but they’d make a great edition to any theatre lovers collection.

Visit the Playbill website to find out more.

JBL Partybox ($$$)

Imagine: you’re camping with some theatre friends and the night is quiet, you take out the JBL Partybox (with included microphones) and crank the musical classics. This is a gem of a speaker – quality sound and the perfect last minute performance set up.

Anker Powercore ($$)

Ask yourself, “how many times have I had a flat battery after a day out?” Now imagine the phone battery after a huge weekend of rehearsals. The Anker Powercore is one of the highest rated power banks on Amazon – worth considering.

360 Compact Towel ($)

There is always so much to pack for backstage – make up wipes are great for a quick clean, but a quality towel is a must. The 360 compact towel conquers the challenge by collecting the body juices AND fitting easily in any day bag.

Collapsible Crates ($)

Talk about multipurpose win – the collapsible crate can be used backstage to keep the prep desk tidy, or to store old programmes and scripts. The uses are endless, but something so practical and easily put away is a must for the performer in your life.

Dancewear Voucher ($$)

Sometimes choosing for someone else is just beyond difficult – so vouchers are just a useful way to show you care. A generic VISA card just won’t do for the dancer/performer in your life – so we recommend Dancewear For You this year – an Australian-owned and run store. Supporting local while gift shopping? That’s something we can get behind!

Hey Mate Session ($$$)

There are few things more important than mental health, and the Hey Mate project is tackling this challenging issue for the arts and entertainment sector. They offer a range of sessions/workshops each year. You don’t need to have a mental health condition to learn empathy and response mechanisms – that’s why these sessions make an extremely powerful and timely gift this year.

Audition Planner ($)

There’s no set rule to what makes a serious performer – but there are certainly traits of a super organised one. The Audition Planner gives the performer a chance to strategise and give themselves a great footing before they enter the theatre/performance space. Hey, it’s also super cheap, so why not, stocking filler at least?
