Casey Donovan to star in ‘Sister Act’ Musical

Australian singer and actress Casey Donovan is set to lead the cast of ‘Sister Act’ as the musical makes its way to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in August, followed by a run at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in November. Donovan will take on the role of Deloris Van Cartier, a character famously portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg in the original film. Joining her will be esteemed actress Genevieve Lemon, who will play Mother Superior.

Donovan expressed her enthusiasm about the role, reminiscing about her love for the original film during her youth and her excitement to be part of such a vibrant and inspiring production.

“Although I never thought I would see the day when I put on a habit, I’m so incredibly excited to be joining ‘Sister Act’ and to be playing the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier, played by the iconic Whoopi Goldberg in the much-loved films,” said Donovan.

“Growing up, ‘Sister Act’ was one of the movies that I watched on repeat. I love the film and am truly honoured to be part of such an uplifting, joyful, fun and feel-good production featuring the brilliant original music by multiple Tony Award-winning composer Alan Menken.”

The musical, which features original music by Alan Menken, a Tony and Oscar-winning composer known for his work on Disney films, promises to be a blend of Motown, soul, and disco that delivers a joyous and uplifting experience.

The story follows Deloris, a disco singer whose life takes an unexpected turn when she witnesses a crime and is placed in a convent for protection. While helping the convent choir, Deloris finds a renewed sense of self and helps her fellow sisters discover their voices.

Casey Donovan is recognised for her versatile career in music, theatre, and television, becoming a household name in Australia from her start on “Australian Idol” to her victory in ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’. Her co-star, Genevieve Lemon, boasts an impressive career in Australian theatre and film, making notable appearances in productions like ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ and films including ‘The Piano’ and ‘The Dressmaker’.
