Whoopi Goldberg to star in Sister Act The Musical

Hallelujah! Your musical prayers have been answered.! Academy Award-winning actress, Whoopi Goldberg is set to star as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act the Musical in July 2020.

In a statement announced on her Facebook page, Goldberg shared her excitement of returning to the dream role alongside BAFTA award winner, Jennifer Saunders.

“I’m coming back as Deloris Van Cartier in ‘Sister Act the Musical’ for 6 weeks in London starting July 29, 2020,” Goldberg said.

“And I’m so excited to be playing with the great and talented Jennifer Saunders as Mother Superior!”

Based on the iconic movie, which was released in 1992, this tribute musical tells the hilarious tale of a disco diva whose life takes an unexpected turn when she witnesses a murder. Under protective custody, she is hidden in one place she certainly won’t be found – a covenant. Disguised as a nun, and under a suspicious watch of the Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices while unexpectantly discovering her own.

Speaking of the news, Goldberg said that her original Deloris is back but a little more experienced.

“Yeah, the original Deloris is back. A little older, a little seasoned but really still kind of out there.”

Saunders shared her excitement regarding the opportunity of playing a role previously made famous by Maggie Smith. She said she wished she could purchase tickets to this life-changing event.

“It’s Whoopi Goldberg, in Sister Act, playing Deloris, at the Eventim Apollo,” Saunders said.

“I would buy tickets, but I can’t buy tickets because I’m in it, but I think this could be the event of the century.”

‘Sister Act The Musical’ features original music by Tony and 8-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Disney’s ‘Aladdin’, ‘Enchanted’) with routines and songs inspired by disco, soul and Motown hits.

The musical is described as “the funniest and funkiest musical around”. It plays at London’s Eventim Apollo Theatre in West End from 29 July to 30 August 2020. Saunders and Goldberg will star alongside each other for six weeks together.

Thank the high heavens as tickets for the holy event are on sale now. We think you might have to book that flight to London while you’re at. #holiday
